Without a doubt, this thrown out metal and terracotta outdoor setting had been collecting dirt and rust for quite sometime. It all looked too hard with the condition it was in. I was that close to moving on from it (like my previous 2 neighbours had), but with a bit of CREATIVE COURAGE and the right materials, it has been given another BURST of life and contemporary STYLE with a POP of happy yellow spray paint!
If you've got a similar piece of outdoor furniture junk you're itching to make over, here's how you can do it.
If you've got a similar piece of outdoor furniture junk you're itching to make over, here's how you can do it.
1. Gather your materials
- Tile cleaner (I used 30 Second Outdoor Cleaner spray)
- Paint scaper
- Wire brush
- Rust converter if you have a lot of rust (I used White Knight's Rust Guard Converter)
- Spray paint primer (I used Rust-Oleum’s Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover 2x PRIMER in Grey for surface preparation of the metal and porous tiles even though the top coat has an inbuilt primer)
- Spray paint top coat (I used Rust-Oleum's Painter's Touch Ultra Cover 2x GLOSS in Sun Yellow. Make sure you use quality spray paint or you won't get the nice finish you're after.)
- Drop sheets
- Safety gear (spray painting mask, goggles, gloves)

2. Prepare the surface
Remove all the rust from the metal using a paint scaper and wire brush. Apply the Rust Converter as per the bottle instructions and leave it to dry. Clean the tiles of any dirt and mould using a suitable tile cleaner and leave it to dry.
3. Spray paint the surface
Make sure it's not a windy day or else paint will go everywhere you don't want it to. Lay out your drop sheets over a wide area for your pieces to sit on. Shake the spray can well and apply several light coats of the primer as per the can instructions. Make sure you have your safety gear on doing this. Once dry, repeat the process with the top coat colour. Leave it to dry.
Then, PROJECT FINISHED! Easy and quick weekend project, huh?
I'm loving YELLOW right now! Wait till you see my next MAKE OVER piece :)
